Multímetro midiendo la conductividad de una chapa con recubrimiento de zinc

Electroconductivity in zinc-rich paints: benefits and applications

A zinc-rich paint only provides cathodic protection if the zinc particles are in electrical contact with each other and with the steel. That is why electrical conductivity is one of the best quality tests for cold galvanizing. In the GALVANOL technical data sheet, the conductivity is 0.0 Ω.

Why conductivity matters

  • Real cathodic protection: the zinc acts as a sacrificial anode and corrodes before the steel, even on scratches and edges.
  • Sign of high zinc content: if there is too much binder, the particles become isolated and the coating stops being conductive: then it is a paint with zinc, not a cold galvanizing coating.
  • Electrical continuity: useful in elements where it is important to maintain the electrical connection between metal parts.
  • Long-lasting protection: the coating continues to protect as long as there is zinc connected to the steel.

How to check it

With a multimeter, measure the resistance between two points on a dry layer of zinc paint. A quality cold galvanizing coating conducts; a low-content "zinc paint" normally does not.

As always, follow the technical data sheet and the standards applicable to your project.
