Before buying a zinc-rich paint: 10 points you should check

Before buying a zinc-rich paint, it is advisable to check 10 points. Most can be resolved by looking at the technical data sheet and the tests according to ISO 12944.

1. Environment (C1 to C5): the paint must be tested for the environment where it will be used. See corrosivity categories.
2. Required thickness: each category and durability requires a dry film thickness. The manufacturer must state it.
3. Corrosion tests: salt spray (ISO 9227) and other ISO 12944-6 tests, with reports you can consult.
4. Adhesion: before and after aging tests.
5. Declared durability: in years, by category and thickness.
6. ASTM A780: the standard for repairing damaged hot-dip galvanizing. It requires a high zinc content in the dry film.
7. ISO 1461: the hot-dip galvanizing standard; it allows repair with suitable zinc-rich paint. It is not enough for the paint to "contain zinc": ask the manufacturer for thicknesses and justification.
8. Compatibility with the substrate and necessary preparation.
9. Manufacturer's warranty and documentation (technical data sheet, safety data sheet, declaration).
10. Ease of application and drying times.
