Puerta metálica de jardín, mitad oxidada y mitad protegida con zinc gris

How to protect metal railings, fences, and gates from rust

Railings, grilles, fences and metal gates are exposed to rain, sun and, near the sea, salt spray. Conventional paint only acts as a barrier: as soon as it is scratched, rust gets underneath and lifts it. Cold galvanizing protects differently.

Why zinc lasts longer than normal paint

Zinc sacrifices itself to protect the steel (cathodic protection). Even if the layer is scratched, the surrounding zinc continues to protect the exposed metal. That is why a coating with 96% zinc lasts for years without rust spreading.

How to do it

  1. Brush off loose rust and remove any peeling old paint.
  2. Degrease with xylene.
  3. Apply 2 coats of GALVANOL with a brush on joints and welds and a roller on flat bars.
  4. If you want colour, wait at least 4–6 hours and apply a solvent-based enamel on top.

How much do I need?

A domestic railing of 8–10 m usually has a surface area of around 4 m²: with a 2 kg tub of GALVANOL you can apply 2 coats. For large gates or long fences, use the How much GALVANOL do I need? calculator.

What if I want a glossy finish?

Over GALVANOL you can apply ALINOL Spray, which gives a shiny metallic finish like new galvanizing.
