One of the most common questions before buying is how much zinc-rich paint is needed. Buying too little forces you to stop work; buying too much ties up money. Three pieces of information will give you the answer.
The three pieces of information you need
- Surface area in m². For profiles, multiply the perimeter of the section by the length.
- Number of coats. 2 coats are recommended; 3 in marine or highly aggressive environments; 1 for touch-ups.
- Coverage per coat. GALVANOL uses approximately 250 g/m² per coat for 40 microns dry, undiluted.
The formula
kg required = m² × coats × 0.25
Real examples
- 10 m railing with 40 mm tubing and bars (≈ 4 m²) at 2 coats: 4 × 2 × 0.25 = 2 kg → one GALVANOL 2 kg container.
- Roofing structure of 40 m² at 2 coats: 40 × 2 × 0.25 = 20 kg → two GALVANOL 10 kg buckets.
- Welding touch-ups (≈ 1 m²): one GALVANOL Spray 500 ml covers approximately 1 m² at 40–60 microns.
Factors that increase consumption
- Very rough, pitted surfaces, or those with heavy rust.
- Outdoor spray gun application in windy conditions (overspray losses).
- Profiles with many edges, screws, and joints.
As a rule of thumb, add a 10–15% margin. If you prefer not to do the math, use our How much GALVANOL do I need? calculator: enter the m² and it will tell you which sizes are the most cost-effective.
