Painting in cold and damp conditions: how to apply cold galvanizing in winter

In winter, many projects come to a halt for a simple reason: almost all paints need more than 5 °C to dry properly. If you apply it in cold weather, the paint remains soft for days, traps moisture, and fails prematurely. For those working outdoors, this means weeks of lost time.

GALVANOL works in cold weather

The GALVANOL can and bucket versions can be applied between -30 °C and +60 °C, with relative humidity of up to 90%. According to its technical data sheet, the touch-dry times are:

• At +20 °C: about 20 minutes.
• At -10 °C: about 40 minutes.
• At -30 °C: about 50 minutes.

Complete drying takes about 4 hours, and full curing takes 72 hours.

Important: the spray has a narrower range, from +5 °C to +40 °C, because it depends on the propellant pressure. For working in freezing conditions, use the can or the bucket.

Tips for working in winter

• No frost or liquid water: GALVANOL tolerates ambient moisture, but the surface must be free of frost, ice, and droplets. Dry it with a cloth or wait for the sun to dry it.
• Store the product in a warm place before using it; this helps it mix better and flow more easily.
• Mix well and stir again every 20–30 minutes: in cold weather, the zinc settles more quickly.
• Work during the middle of the day if possible, when the surface is driest.
• Respect the times between coats and do not apply layers that are too thick: several thin coats are better.

An advantage for your business

For locksmiths, installers, and maintenance companies, being able to keep working in winter means no interruption to billing or delayed deliveries. And for industrial maintenance managers, it means taking advantage of plant shutdowns in December and January without depending on the weather.
